Verstappen holds off charging Hamilton for 50th F1 win
  + stars: | 2023-10-22 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
Dominant Red Bull and Verstappen, who started in sixth place and whose win was the first in Austin by a driver not on the front row, have already secured the constructors' and drivers' titles. "The whole race, I was struggling a lot with the brakes," said Verstappen, who was booed by some of the crowd as he stood on the podium. "I normally never really struggle with braking so far in my F1 career, but it was definitely a bit of a problem." "Forecast P2, maybe the win," the 38-year-old was informed over the radio as he chased down the McLaren. Alpine's Esteban Ocon was the first retirement, his race ending on lap seven after a first lap collision with McLaren's Oscar Piastri.

Aston Martin Wants to Win and to Sell Cars, Too
  + stars: | 2023-07-28 | by ( Lawrence Ulrich | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Auto racing has helped sell products from Budweiser to Viagra, motor oil to Martini & Rossi, and seemingly every gasoline and cigarette brand. Now, with Formula 1 making huge inroads in the United States — supercharged by the hit Netflix documentary series “Drive to Survive” — we’ll see if it can sell Aston Martins. A “Drive to Survive” camera crew trailed behind Stroll, whose son, Lance, drives one of the team’s cars that are punching above their weight. The next trick for his father is to reverse the brand’s serially shaky fortunes and get out of Ferrari’s shadow with wealthy buyers. Outside the fancy showroom, framed by one of the largest plate-glass windows in New York City, passers-by wear out smartphones taking photos of a Valkyrie AMR Pro inside, a goblin-green alien at rest.

Verstappen wins in Spain to continue Red Bull sweep
  + stars: | 2023-06-04 | by ( Alan Baldwin | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
Red Bull's Sergio Perez, Verstappen's closest rival in a season that looks sure to crown the dominant Dutch 25-year-old for a third time, finished fourth after fighting back from 11th at the start. The victory was Verstappen's fifth of the season, third in a row, third in Spain and the double world champion's 40th in Formula One. TALKING POINTThe form of the Mercedes drivers, with a re-designed car after a disappointing start to the season, provided a main talking point. Mercedes moved up to second in the championship on 152 points to runaway Red Bull's 287 and with Aston Martin dropping to third on 134. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who started from the pitlane after a nightmare in qualifying left him on the back row, finished 11th.

[1/4] May 6, 2023; Miami Gardens, Florida, USA; Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso (14) of Spain reacts after qualifying for the Miami Grand Prix at Miami International Autodrome. Mandatory Credit: John David Mercer-USA TODAY SportsMIAMI, May 6 (Reuters) - Fernando Alonso will start the Miami Grand Prix on the front row alongside pole sitter Sergio Perez, providing Aston Martin the chance for a win, believes team principal Mike Krack. The Red Bulls of Verstappen and Perez have been in a league of their own this season winning every grand prix, with three of the four races one-two finishes. If you start from the first row your aim has to be to win the race. Verstappen, last year's winner in Miami, will start ninth but Alonso guessed that he will see him on his exhaust by lap 25.

Red Bull's double world champion Max Verstappen had spent much of the hot and steamy practice at the top of the charts but ended the session fourth fastest behind the two Mercedes and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. Ferrari's Carlos Sainz was fifth fastest followed by Alpine's Pierre Gasly and the Aston Martins of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll. Hamilton was just 0.212 seconds back while Verstappen, the winner in the inaugural Miami Grand Prix, was nearly a half-second off the pace. Until the spin Hulkenberg had been enjoying a lively practice for the U.S.-owned outfit, sitting second behind Verstappen when the session was paused.
Lots of sporting buzz in Miami but can F1 deliver?

Once again in a league of their own, Red Bull have won every grand prix this season, with three of the four races one-two finishes. While Miami can deliver plenty of Monaco like pizzazz, the action on the track could also be similar to Monte Carlo with precious little overtaking. Double world champion Max Verstappen (93) leads Red Bull team mate Sergio Perez (87) in the drivers standings and a resurgent Alonso a distant third on 60 points. Hamilton's team mate George Russell had a tongue-and-cheek solution, forget about Red Bull and dive into the battle for third place. Verstappen fastest in chaotic Baku practice

April 28 (Reuters) - Red Bull's Formula One leader Max Verstappen put in the fastest time right at the chequered flag on Friday in a chaotic sole practice for the new format Azerbaijan Grand Prix sprint weekend. The double world champion, last year's winner in Baku, lapped the fast street circuit with a best time of one minute 42.315 seconds with his final effort on the soft tyres. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who has never won in Baku but will be chasing his third successive pole in Azerbaijan in later qualifying for Sunday's grand prix, was second on the timesheets. The Monegasque ended up 0.037 seconds slower, after going top in the dying seconds, with Red Bull's Sergio Perez third and Ferrari's Carlos Sainz fourth. Perez has the best record of any driver on the starting grid in Baku with a victory in 2021, second last year and two third places.
The superrich are throwing more money than ever at fancy cars. That doesn’t always make them super-profitable to manufacture. Ferrari reported “remarkable order intake” alongside third-quarter earnings on Wednesday. The luxury-car maker doesn’t disclose reservations, yet orders for its Purosangue model—its long-discussed answer to sport-utility vehicles, launched in September with a starting price of €390,000 in Italy, equivalent to $385,000—are running “way above our most promising expectations,” said Chief Executive Officer Benedetto Vigna on a call with analysts.
